I have been looking at ways to maximise the functionality available to the user while at the same time maintaining a clean, non-cluttered look to the site. Moreover, I don't want to overwhelm newcomers with all the available options. The complex filters, for instance, should of course be readily available — there's no way I am dumbing down the functionality — but that doesn't mean they have to be screaming at the user. The solution is to place the filters in boxes which can be opened/closed.

The default is to open only the Time Filter ("Past Stories"), since it's the most commonly used. But that too can be closed, for maximum unclutteredness. And by the way, this is how the Section Filter, and the Topic Filter look.
