Proposition #5

Many a journalist has fallen victim to the fallacy that in order to provide an objective account of any issue one must dedicate equal time to all viewpoints on that issue.

This is one of my major gripes with the current state of the media. I would like to believe there is no malice in most reporters misunderstanding the nature of their profession, and that this attitude simply boils down to the lingering poisonous effects of Post-modernism. Sometimes I have my doubts, though.

There are fortunately those who escape this widespread fallacy. Glenn Greenwald from Salon magazine is one of them. And in a brilliant recent article he touches on this very subject. The context is (surprise, surprise) the orgy of falsehoods that is dominating the run-up to next year's American election. Interesting read.
